Installing or altering a manufactured or mobile home?
What are Mobile Homes?
Mobile homes are basically homes, which are built in factories, and can then set up virtually on any piece of property. They are transported by trucks and designed to be used for temporary or permanent accommodation. They are usually blocked, leveled and skirted and can be easily relocated. Today they are well constructed with 2×6 exterior walls. Well insulated and a large variety of interior and exterior finishes are available. They are available in a variety of single and double wide widths and lengths.
The ability to set these homes in parks where property ownership is not necessary has assisted in making home ownership available to large numbers which may not be able to afford to own a conventional home. Today most banks will offer chattel mortgages over 25 years with as little as 5% as down payment.
History of Mobile Homes
Mobile homes were actually derived from the travel trailer, which is a unit attached with wheels. Smaller units were preferred for camping, while larger units were used by families who had to travel for months to more than one location. The first of this type of home is said to have originated from England, where they were popularly known as caravans. In America, the first mobile home known to be built was in the 1800s. These homes were moved by a team of horses and were mostly movable beach properties. The true homes of this type, which we consider today, began in the early 19th century, with automobile trailers or coaches, designed with all the home luxuries. These trailers were more popular after World War II.
The main regulation for this house is its mobility. These homes were basically marketed to those people whose lifestyle required continuous movement from one place to another. By the 1950s, these types of homes gained more popularity, as they were now considered an inexpensive form of housing, which can be left in any location for unlimited time. They were also installed with a masonry foundation. Veterans also needed this housing, as after war most of them didn’t have a place to live. Therefore, they opted for mobile homes as they were cheap, and easy to provide to their families.
The next development in mobile homes came in the form of increased width and space. Previously, they were around 8 feet in width and around 20 feet in length, and had sections but no bathrooms. The space and design was then reconfigured and its width was increased to around 10 feet, and length up to 30 feet. There was an addition of bathrooms, and it was then, that the term mobile home was coined. The homes were given rectangular shape and were constructed with aluminum panels. This helped travelers, as they were able to transport small unit homes simply with a car, and large mobile homes were transported by a professional truck company or by large trailers.
In the recent economic situation, this type of home has gained immense popularity. Being built in a factory-controlled, labor-efficient environment allows pricing to be on average 75% the cost of site built comparisons. This type of construction has become a very attractive alternative for first time buyers and people looking to downsize. Ideas like mobile homes have almost turned the table. It is their benefits of low-cost and less maintenance, which have made mobile homes an important and interesting option to bank on. This information is HALSTONHOMES
